Nell’s Baptism

We baptized Nell into the Catholic Faith yesterday. I haven’t even barely begun to sort through the 200 photos that our wonderful neighbor took, but here are a few.  We keep Baptisms fairly small and family oriented and it was a wonderful day and it reminded me of the wonderful family and friend support group that we have been blessed with.

Nell wore Mr. B’s mom’s Baptismal gown and then we changed her into Thomas’s Baptismal garment for the actual Baptism, and Thomas wore his Uncle Paul’s vintage shirt…pretty much just because I didn’t own a dress shirt for him and my mom still had this shirt that my brother wore 26 years ago. But whatever, let’s just ooh and ahh at the family history of clothing that was a part of this ceremony (my dress and Mr. B’s clothes have no history. Sorry).

When we were back to the house afterwards, we put Nell in the gown my sister, Kate – who is Nell’s Godmother – and I were Baptized in for photo opportunities:
Isn’t my sister gorgeous? She’s smart (an Engineer who pretty much pioneers Engineering Education at every high school she’s ever set foot in), a natural blonde, loves my babies, and is the only person who can talk me off the ledge when it comes to things that trouble my very un-engineering mind: math homework, “Will I be single forever?” high school tears, tiling a backsplash, etc. And she’s single, you know, should you know someone. Just throwing that out there (even though she’ll be furious with me for doing so. Love you, Sissy).  But let’s get back to the ceremony.

Thomas was very interested in the Baptismal Font. Here he is talking to his Uncle Mike about it. He was really excited for Nell’s “Bathtism” – which we thought was poignant since he had no idea that Nell would, in a way, be getting a bath during it.

And here he is taking a little break with Corduroy on the floor of the church. Being a big brother at a “Bathtism” is exhausting work.

I kept the reception after the ceremony pretty simple – strung the family baptismal gowns along the back wall of the kitchen, threw down a pink plaid tablecloth, cut some hydrangeas from the front yard and ordered a cake from the grocery store. Food was meatballs, shrimp cocktail, pasta salad, chips and guac, chipotle cream cheese dip for crackers. Simple simple simple.

It was a perfect day for our sweet Nell Caroline.

  1. So sweet! Fiona’s baptism is on 10.7, and I am definitely planning on keeping it simple too! Love the family gowns!

  2. Congratulations to Nell on becoming one of God’s little lambs! And although you kept it simple, it looks beautiful! My hubby’s brother lives in the Denver area and is not married. He is a good looking x-ray tech who loves the outdoors. :o )

  3. Congrats! I just realized that you got Nell’s middle name from your mom’s name. I probably should have figured this out months ago but thought it was funny because we did the same thing.

  4. Love, love, love. Seriously, there are so few things as absolutely amazing as a baptism!

  5. haha… “But whatever, let’s just ooh and ahh at the family history of clothing that was a part of this ceremony” I love it!
Congratulations, Nell! You make a very cute addition to the Catholic Church! :)

  6. She is such a cutie. Jut gets prettier and prettier. And I love all the personal details. Simple doesn’t mean not pretty and meaningful. You nailed it.

  7. Just beautiful!

  8. So um, don’t mind if I do on stealing that baptism gown laundry line idea, so freaking cute! And oh yeah, congratulations Nell and welcome to the wonderful world of Catholicism! We’ve got confession and Mary and guilt, it’s the best. Seriously Em, gorgeous family as always.
