Breastfeeding Wardrobe

Let’s talk breastfeeding fashion.  If you can call it fashion…it took me a solid 6 months to come up with a uniform that made me feel like me and was breastfeeding accessible. But, I breastfed Thomas for 13 months and definitely figured out my signature style…a look I felt put together enough in to not be embarrassed of my appearance, but at the same time felt comfortable in.  And with round 2 of nursing underway, I recently splurged on all new tank tops and nursing bras. My favorite tanks are kind of pricey, but they’re longer than Target tanks (more comfortable and more slimming) and I wore them to death with Thomas and they’re essential to my breastfeeding uniform.

My breastfeeding necessities: 1) Glamourmom Long Tops (these blow Target tanks out of the water and are definitely worth the spend…but I recommend a dark color for coverage). 2) Target Mossimo Juniors Tees. They come in every color under the sun, are $8, and the v-neck stretches for lazy breastfeeding when you don’t want to expose your stomach. 3) Bravado Body Silk Seamless Nursing Bra. This nursing bra changed my outlook on nursing bras altogether (I swore them off and only wore nursing tanks for the last 6 months of breastfeeding Thomas, but this baby is comfortable and worth every penny). 4) Jersey skirts - the slightly more acceptable version of yoga pants. This one’s from Old Navy, but any Jersey skirt will do…I have a collection of them mostly hailing from Old Navy, Target and Gap. 5) Cardigans for fall or to class-up the tank and tee look. I buy them plain, striped, polka dotted…anything to mix up my uniform. 6) Trouser jeans for a bit of a polished mom look.
While I am mostly a stay-at-home/work-from-home mom, these basics work for when I have to go into the office or meet with a client, too…I usually do the tank with a belted cardigan and pencil skirt for client meetings.

  1. I love those Target t-shirts. They also have some great “boyfriend” cardigans (or at least they did a few weeks ago). I think anything long is good for post-partum wear. Slimming is definitely the name of the game while trying to lose that baby weight!

  2. Thank you do much for this. I have the target tanks and only west then to bed bc they aren’t flattering at all. And I’m in serious need of a nursing bra. Back to work next week means a major wardrobe dilemma. Gotta be professional and accessible to pump.

  3. i was actually going to email you today to ask what tanks/bras you liked (since i remember you tweeting about buying some) so glad you posted this! my 2 bras/1 tank from target that i have going on right now is totally not working. i’m a hot mess. thanks for this! :)

  4. I love those Target shirt too! Also, the “long & lean” tanks in the junior section pull down from the top enough so that you can layer one under the v-neck tee and pull the tee up/tank down so your stomach isn’t exposed.
It looks like I need to finally pull the trigger and buy that Bravado bra, too. I’ve been debating, and I REALLY need a nursing bra. My Target nursing tanks are already starting to wear out. =(

  5. Thank you for sharing! I bookmarked this for the future.

  6. Yeah!! I didn’t realize it was possible to look anything but frumpy while breast feeding!! thanks for sharing! I love hearing what works for other mamas out there!
