With our new couch purchase on the horizon, I’ve been thinking about our long term style. I know that I like things to look clean, classic and crisp and I don’t foresee that changing. But that’s not to say I couldn’t go a little less jeans and flip flops and a little more dressed up for the club someday.
A pure white slipcovered sofa is in our near future – we just have to place the order. So with the purchase looming, I sat down to think about how the room will evolve as we gradually move away from being the hand-me-down kids. And I know that, for now, we’ll stay comfy and casual – with my signature beach flair without forgetting that I live in landlocked Colorado. So I mapped out the evolution of our living room – with no completion date in mind. Hell, we’ll probably live in a different house all together and have five kids jumping on that white sofa when this plan comes to fruition.
In my picture of our evolved living room, I see a slightly more tailored version of what we have now – white and black with green accents. A great rug in my signature green (I’ve been eyeing this trellis rug from Shades of Light for about a year now, but the price is scary for the hand-me-down kid in me). I imagine that someday Casco and Mr. B will part with the big green chair (or at least relocate it to their man cave when one exists) and two subtly striped neutral chairs can flank a classic black end table holding one of my favorite lamps. I picture a wall of family photos just like we love now, and two airy white cocktail tables positioned in front of the couch.
But, let’s just say that things change. That all of a sudden velvet and wearing makeup daily and combing my hair into anything but a ponytail are fighting for my flip flop loving, Boulder educated attention. Would my beloved future couch fit the bill?
I think so. The same basics remain – the couch, the area rug, my beloved green lamps. But in place of the beachier striped arm chairs we have clean-lined, more modern gray ones to flank a fabulous mirrored chest. The artwork’s grown-up a little bit, but with a nod to our interests, and the round, black coffee table anchors the space.
It doesn’t take much to completely change the vibe of a room – without changing the basic investment pieces. I’m excited about the potential for this one, white slipcovered couch in our imperfect little home.
I love that rug. And I think you are making a wise choice on your couch that will transition with you as your style changes throughout the years. Very lovely!
LOVE the rug and that couch is classic and can go so many ways as you well know. Green is my fave too!! Your moodboards both rock!
I love both looks! And I’m with the other girls, LOVE that rug!
I love that rug–brings in great opportunity to be a little edgier
I am so NOT edgy…I love comfortable living, very traditional, cozy…I only wish I could be more modern, but I just can’t!
You can’t go wrong with a classic sofa like that, and the rug, well, it’s fabulous!
This looks great! Also, am I right that the rug costs $128? We’ve been eying a rug that costs ten times that. WHY must we have such expensive taste?
Jess – I wish. That’s the small little mat that’s $128. The 5 x 8 is closer to $600. Which really, isn’t that out there for a rug, just not in my “everything has been handed down to us” budget minded mind.
Both of those look great! I was wondering where you found the mirrored chest or the black end table in #1. I would be happy to have either of those roooms in my house.
You make a great point that changing a few accessories can totally change the feel of the room. And I love both “themes” you’ve got going, though I’m partial to the first
I think both of these look cool, classic and classy – just like you.
I love the slipcovered sofa. Can’t wait to see it all come together. =)
Both designs look great! I hope you get your rug someday because it definately works. Couch shopping was one of the hardest things that we have done so far (much harder than finding a house). I love the look of a white slipcovered couch but unfortunately for me it didn’t work out. Ahh well, maybe in my next house…
I love both the today inspiration & the tomorrow inspiration!
And you are going to LOVE that couch!!! Still the Rowe one, right? I lounge on my version of it every night.
I love the idea of a white couch, how dreamy. And the rug is stunning, too bad so is the price tag!
I love that rug. Both designs are nice, but the first is more like me- which I guess is why I like it better.
Hey Kar in Denver – I answered your question in the post below, but those prints are from ZGallerie!
::flicks my Boulder ponytail & digs my toes into my flip flops::
Both boards have that pulled-together, effortless chic look while letting your style shine through (I HATE generic-looking moodboards that start to all look the same–Ha).
The white sofa is DIVINE.
