Casual Winter Breakfast Nook

We're not hosting Thanksgiving, and my dining room table is pretty much set everyday, so for Kim's challenge this week I decided to turn my attention to my oft-neglected breakfast nook. Mr. B and I eat at the dining room table every night, so this table really is just where I eat my breakfast before work. It needs a casual vibe - cause we're not fancy schmancy people.

This table is a dumping ground. Directly to the right in the picture above is the door to the garage. And with no mudroom to speak of, the table collects keys, handbags, bills, parking tickets, speeding tickets, hate mail and other crap. I keep my dining room table set to prevent the dumping ground scenario, but it's never worked in the kitchen. So we'll give it another try - and maybe paying attention to the speed limit and parking restrictions would help move us in the right direction. We're nothing if not imperfect over here.

I've always thought this space needed some warmth. So I relocated the burlap centerpiece I made for the Dining Room and placed it on a green placemat to add a little color to all of the wood. Then I grabbed my favorite green dishes for a little splash of color.

I love to use dish towels as napkins for casual dining. They're absorbent, actually cover laps and are made to be washed. The more washed, worn and mismatched the better, in my opinion, but for this challenge I went with my Williams-Sonoma candy cane striped dish towels.

I love red and green together - and not just for Christmas. So that's our table setting for this week. A casual place to sit and enjoy our cereal separately - and maybe we'll start eating dinners here more often if we don't let the junk pile up.

  1. So cute! LOVE the dishtowels as napkins idea. Why have I never considered that? We'll be at a PB and Crate and Barrel this weekend, you know I'll be on the lookout for fun candy-striped towels to use as napkins.

And, I'm still totally loving the burlap centerpiece. YOu should be crowned the queen of burlap. =)

our table is the same way - dumping ground - no matter how hard i try. it's even set, but tony just moves the placemat over to make room for his junk!

  3. I think using dishtowels as napkins is a great idea. Especially if you have little ones. I love all the slightly christmas-y colors you've got going on, I just have one request. Can we see everything at night with the candles lit? :-)

  4. I totally relate to Kim--I have more chipped plates from Justin throwing keys and shit onto the set table...I've totally given up on keeping it set all the time!

But I LOVE this look--just the right mix of pulled together and casual!

  6. Cute! We had that junk pileup issue on our kitchen island, which was the most convenient dumping ground by the garage door. But actually, that's stopped recently. I'm not quite sure why. We added a table in the hall by the front door, so maybe now we make the trek over there from the garage?

  7. Love the dishtowels! Now I really want a Candy Cane.

Our dining room table is always the "catch-all" for our junk, which is strange because our family room is the room you walk in from the front door, and our kitchen is the room you walk in if you come in the back door. Must be something about tables.

  9. seriously love the dish towel idea. plus, you can get cute sets with different patterns, unlike napkins which tend to be all the same...genius Emily, genius!

  10. The candy stripe red and white reminds me of peppermint candy, which in turn reminds me of peppermint bark, which I love! And your idea of using dish towels as napkins is great. Love the burlap idea too!

  11. You are a genius. I'm putting those towels (in khaki) on my wishlist!

Those green dishes from your aunt make me salivate every time I see them. Does she need another niece...I'm totally available.

  12. The burlap must create a really neat texture when lit from within by the candles!

  13. I love the idea of dish towels for napkins! I always worry about using cloth napkins, because I don't want them to get dirty. That would mean washing them and then they just never look right afterwards.
    Speeding tickets, huh? ;)
